Measurement: Using the balance

Objectives:

  1. To evaluate a student's ability to measure mass.

  2. To evaluate a student's ability to rank order objects according to their mass.

Questions:

  1. Weigh each of the objects separately using the colored gram cubes.

  2. Count and write the number of cubes needed to balance each object in the chart.

    Object Number of Cubes
    Crayon
    Clothespin
    Washer
    Wooden Block


    The mass of the objects should be verified by scorer and acceptable error should be established for all measurements, e.g. washer = 8 cubes 1 cube.

  3. Which object weighs the most? ________________________

  4. Which object weighs the least? ________________________

    The order of mass for objets should be verified by scorer.
