GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Write your name, school name, and school code on the lines above. Do not begin this test until the directions tell you to do so.

The purpose of this task is to investigate the process of converting a former coal mine into useful, productive land. You will have a total of 45 minutes to complete this task. You may use up to 30 minutes to complete the group work, found the first two pages of this form. When you finish the group activity, someone from your group should tell the facilitator. Then you may go onto the individual work. You may not talk while you are working on those pages.

Your group should have the following materials:

  • Set of Martiki photographs
  • Information sheets
  • Martiki Coal Corporation Nomination for 1990 Reclamation Award
  • Calculator
  • Highlighter
  • Pencils

GROUP ACTIVITY

  1. The Martiki Coal Corporation has worked on a coal mine reclamation project for several years. As you begin this task, you will work with your group to study and discuss the information on the Martiki Coal Corporation. There are three sections, labeled A, B, and C in the Martiki Coal Corporation's Nomination for 1990 Reclamation Award. Each person should read one section; two people may read one section at the same time, if necessary. You may use the highlighter or other writing utensil to mark the document. After you have read your section, summarize the information for your group. A chart is provided that you will use to assist you in your analysis of the data found in the Martiki Coal Corporation document. Everyone in the group must actively participate in the document review process. Each member of the group should record the group's information on his or her own response form in the chart on the following page.

Record information from your group in this chart.
Conditions Before Mine Conditions After Mine
Land Use
Control of Land
Topography
Plants/Vegetation
Animals/Wildlife
Economy of Area
Soil
Water
Other

When you are finished with the work on this page, one member of the group should tell the facilitator that your group has finished its group work. Then go on to the individual work. Remember that you must work alone on those pages. You may not discuss the questions or share information.

INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY  (you must work alone on these pages)

  1. Based on the information the group gathered, describe how effectively the reclamation process analyze the impact of the mine on the local environment. Then, using this information and the information you may have learned on your own, thoroughly discuss several other concerns that should be investigated before making a decision on the effectiveness of a reclamation project such as this one.
