Objectives:

  1. To evaluate a student's ability to make observations.

  2. To evaluate a student's ability to make inferences based on their observations.

Questions:

  1. What kind of motion is made by the object in box A?

    In order for observations to be acceptable they must be logical for the objects in the boxes. Inferences must be logically related to student observations.

Scoring Key:

MYSTERY BOXES Number of Points
1. Any logical motion for a washer, e.g. sliding 1
2. Any logical shape for an object providing the motion described, e.g. flat, square, rectangle 1
3. Any logical property for a washer, e.g. heavy, hard 1
4. Any logical motion for a marble, e.g. rolling 1
5. Any logical shape for an object producing the motion described, e.g. round, cylindrical 1
