TASK: S1B "The Effectiveness of Antacids"                               GRADE 12
STUDENT NAME:_______________________________________________
SCHOOL NAME:________________________________________________

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The purpose of this task is to design and construct a scientific experiment to test which of four antacids would be the most effective for neutralizing acid. You will be working in a croup of five for the first 30 minutes of the task. You will then complete the individual portion of the ask independently during the rest of the period.

You will test the antacids. The observer in your group will time the parts of the test and record some data. READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AS YOU COMPLETE THIS TASK.

MATERIALS:
You should have a subtest kit and one of the substance bottles (A or B or C or D).

Subtest kit includes:
  1. four antacid containers labeled: Antacid #1, Antacid #2, Antacid #3, Antacid #4.
  2. four spatulas/stirring rods
  3. universal pH indicator paper
  4. a 4-well tray
    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. You will take a subtest kit and one of the substances. The observer will keep time for your group. You must follow time limits as the group observer directs. After 30 minutes the test facilitator will break your group up and you will finish the task on your own.

    2. DETERMINING PROCEDURES: For the first 5 minutes of the task your group must decide exactly how you will do the testing. Each person must follow the same procedures and test the substance that was chosen in step 1 of the directions above. You have 5 minutes to decide the procedures that you will use. Your observer will tell you when 5 minutes are up. Briefly summarize your procedures below.

    3. CONDUCTING THE TEST: You will have exactly 15 minutes to conduct your test. It is important that you determine the pH of the contents of your substance bottle before doing anything else. Then proceed with your test and record all of your observations and data in the space provided below. You must stop when the observer tells you the 15-minute time limit is over. Do your test following the procedures that you agreed upon in instruction 2.

    4. DISCUSSION: As soon as your 15-minute testing time is complete, your group will come together for 10 minutes to exchange information. Each tester should tell the rest of the group the data that she/he recorded during their testing time. IMPORTANT: EVERYONE IN THE GROUP MUST WRITE DOWN ALL OF THE DATA AND INFORMATION GIVEN BY THE OTHER GROUP MEMBERS. Record the information in the space provided below.

Note: You may not begin the individual portion of this task until your test facilitator instructs you to do so.

YOU MUST ANSWER QUESTIONS 5 THROUGH 9 ON YOUR OWN.

    5. Prepare a table, chart or graph that pulls together and displays all of the information from your group.

    6. List the antacids in order from most effective to least effective.

    7. How did you determine the antacid effectiveness as listed in question 6 above? Justify your response with data from your testing.

    8. If you were doing this task by yourself, how would you do it differently? Explain why.

    STUDENT NAME:_______________________________________________
    SCHOOL NAME:________________________________________________

    GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The purpose of this task is to design and construct a scientific experiment to test which of four antacids would be the most effective for neutralizing acid. You will be working in a croup of five for the first 30 minutes of the task. You will then complete the individual portion of the ask independently during the rest of the period.

You will act as a group observer/recorder. The other four people will actually do the testing. READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AS YOU COMPLETE THIS TASK.

    MATERIALS:

    Observer - timer

Testers - each tester should have a subtest kit and one of the substance bottles (A or B or C or D).

    Subtest kit includes:
    1. four antacid containers labeled: Antacid #1, Antacid #2, Antacid #3, Antacid #4.
    2. four spatulas/stirring rods
    3. universal pH indicator paper
    4. a 4-well tray
      INSTRUCTIONS:

You have two important things to do while your group conducts their test. Follow the instructions carefully.
      1. First, you must keep track of the time for your group. Use the timer provided for this purpose. The timing sequence you will follow is shown on page 4 in step 3. Read the instructions below before beginning your timing.

      2. Second, you are to write a description of the procedures that the group decides to use when conducting their testing. Write your description in the space provide for instruction 4. Describe the procedures in as much detail as possible.

      3. Time schedule:
        1. As soon as everyone is seated with their materials, set the timer for 5 minutes. During this time, you and your group will decide exactly how each person should do the test. All people should follow the same procedures.
        2. When the timer rings, reset the timer for 15 minutes. Your group will now have 15 minutes to conduct their tests. They will only be allowed 15 minutes. Tell them every few minutes how much time they have left.
        3. When the timer rings, reset the timer for 10 minutes. Instruct your group to come together to exchange information. Each tester should give their information to the group. Everyone in the group, including the observer, should record all of the information from all of the testers in the space provided for instruction 5 below.
        4. After 30 minutes, the test facilitator will tell your group to break up and you will complete the rest of the questions numbered 6 through 10 on your own.

      4. Write your description of the procedures the testers are following in the space below.
