The purpose of this task is to study several unidentified substances and suggest a use for each substance. You will have a total of 45 minutes to complete this task. You may use up to 20 minutes to complete the group work.

When your group is finished with the group work, one member of the group should tell the person in charge that you have finished.

Your group should have the following materials:

  • five powder samples
  • water
  • magnifying lens
  • vinegar
  • mixing tray
  • cup
  • scoopula (spoon)
  • pencils

GROUP ACTIVITY:

  1. Suppose you have found four substances, labeled only A through D. Your task is to study the characteristics of and determine a use for each substance. As a group, examine the substances using the materials you have been provided. Examine and test substances for reactivity to water and vinegar but not to each other. For example, do not mix substance A with substance B. Use small quantities (no more than 4 spoonfuls) of each substance. Discuss your findings. Each person should record the information in the data table.

DO NOT TASTE THE SAMPLES.
