TASK S1 - TEMPERATURE SCHOOL

SCORING GUIDE

CATEGORY 4	Student clearly interprets reasonable data in the table to say that the room temperature water will remain the same over time and that the hot and cold water will both gradually approach that same room temperature. Says that all three will have the same temperature after an hour, as will the hot chocolate after an hour.
CATEGORY 3	Student uses the data table to decide that the room temperature water will not change, and that the hot water will get cooler and the cold water will get warmer. Does not clearly state that the three will eventually come to the same (room) temperature. May say that after an hour the hot water will still get cooler and the cold water will still get warmer. Says that the hot chocolate will get cold.
CATEGORY 2	Student does not show evidence of interpreting the data table. Is uncertain about what the three temperatures will eventually do but says that the hot water will cool and the cold water will get warmer. Responds in a similar indefinite way about the hot chocolate.
CATEGORY 1	Student does not predict the way the temperatures will change. Shows minimal understanding of the process of heating and cooling.
CATEGORY 0	Response is totally incorrect or irrelevant.
BLANK	Blank/no response.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Although the group data table will not be included in scoring, good responses must refer to the way the data were observed to change, and show that the expected tendencies were discovered. It is very important to scoring this activity that good responses reflect the correct observations and the tendency of hot and cold water to change toward the constant temperature of the room temperature water.
