How to Score the Data Table, Graph, and Writing Sample

DATA TABLE:

First examine the data table.

Score Description
0 If no information is recorded.
If minimal data are recorded, you must make a value judgment as to whether any of what is recorded would be useful in understanding what the student did during the inquiry. If your answer is "no" mark a zero.
1 If minimal data are recorded, you must make a value judgment as to whether any of what is recorded would be useful in understanding what the student did during the inquiry. If your answer is "yes" mark a one.
2 If the information is useful in describing what took place during the inquiry and if several experimental points are recorded in some organized manner.
3 If the student has additionally included some labels or appropriate units.
4 If the appropriate units are in place and the students has labeled the independent variable on the left and the dependent variable on the right.

Score Description
0 If no information is recorded.
If some minimal information is recorded, you must make a value judgment as to whether any of what is recorded would be useful in understanding what the student did during the inquiry. If your answer is "no" mark a zero.
1 If some minimal information is recorded, you must make a value judgment as to whether any of what is recorded would be useful in understanding what the student did during the inquiry. If your answer is "yes" mark a one.
2 If student has plotted some data points from the above table, and the plotted points show a lower left to upper right pattern and has provided at least one label.
3 If the student has all of the above and has provided the appropriate labels for both axes and an acceptable title.
4 If student has provided all of the above and has constructed a best fit line.

 

WRITING SAMPLE:

Now read the student's writing sample in its entirety. After you have read the written material, read it again, only this time follow the scoring method described.

NOTE: From this point on, make certain student writes using complete sentences. If not, decrease the score by one mark down. Also, if one of the items listed is missing, likewise decrease the score by one mark down.

2 If the student poses the problem, describes a logical procedure and relates the conclusion to the investigation.
3 If the student poses the problem, describes variables, details a logical procedure and relates the conclusion to the problem.
4 If the student poses the problem, describes the variables, details the logical procedure, relates the conclusion to the investigation and justifies the prediction made.
