Grades 5-8 Performance Tasks

 


The grades 5-8 performance tasks currently come from several sources: the Council of Chief State School Officers/State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (CCSSO/SCASS), Partnership for the Assessment of Standards-based Science (PASS), the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), the New York State Education Department (NYSED), the RAND Institution (RAND), the Assessment of Performance Unit (APU), and the Oregon State Education Department (OSED).

Some tasks cover multiple content areas. All tasks include a Science as Inquiry component. The specific inquiry skills are displayed in the assessment chart for the task.

pH Acid Base Indicators (CCSSO) Demonstrate understanding of the role of acid-base indicators as a function of pH.

 
Applied Science

Phases of Matter (NYSED) Apply content knowledge about the phases of matter to observations and problems from everyday life.

Rain Drops (APU) Examine drops of water on several materials used on the outside of buildings.

 
Classify

Classification of Materials (RAND) This task assesses students' abilities to classify, organize and present data, and describe objects and their characteristics.

Electricity

* Electrical Circuits and Switches (CCSSO) Design a circuit that can be utilized by someone without hands.

More Power to You (CCSSO) Construct and use a simple galvanometer to detect the presence of an electric current.

 

Energy

Bounce Ball Back (MSPAP) Working in teams of four to measure the rebound heights of a tennis ball dropped from four different heights. Also investigating with the bouncing balls to measure changes in the type of energy they possess.

Heat

Heat Retention (CCSSO) Test four materials to see which would be best for use as a heat mass.

Ice Melting (OSED) Design investigations to test various materials to prevent heat gain in frozen water.

Insulators (OSED) Design and carry out an investigation to test which material is the best insulator.

Sun and Temperature (NYSED) Observe the relationship of temperature to environmental conditions.

Survival (APU) Determine the best material from which to make a jacket to keep the body warm.

Magnets

Classifying Materials (CCSSO SCASS) Group the elements according to their relative magnetic properties and densities.

Magnets (OSED) Design an investigation exploring the strength of magnets.

Mass and Density

Density (CCSSO) Construct aluminum foil boats and see how many washers they can support before sinking.

Density and Buoyancy (OSED) Practice measuring, calculating, and predicting density and buoyancy.

Density of a Sinker (NYSED) Determine the mass, volume and density of a sinker.

Density of Minerals (NYSED) Formulate and apply rules used to compare and rank mineral samples.

Unknown Liquids (NYSED) Determine which bottle has the liquid of greater density.

Measurement

Estimating (APU) Make simple observations and estimations on the mass, volume, length and area of various objects.

Motion and Forces

Changing Ramp Heights (NYSED) Determine the relationship between the height of a ramp and the energy of a ball.

Circular Motion (CCSSO SCASS) Investigate centripetal force.

Friction (RAND) Examine the relationship between object weight and pulling force on various surfaces.

Half-Ball (KDE) Investigate Newton's Laws of Motion and the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Height of Bounce (NYSED) Determine the relationship between the height of release and rebound of a ping pong ball.

Pendulum (RAND) Create a pendulum and measure the periodicity of the pendulum, using four different combinations of string.

Pendulums (OSED) Construct pendulums and experiment with variables.

Rolling Down Hill (ISTA) Perform an experiment, collect, and analyze data of a rolling marble down a ramp, and report results aftering completing the experiment.

Sand In Bottles (NYSED) Determine how fast a bottle will roll down a ramp with varying amounts of sand inside.

Swinging (APU) Examine and modify a swinging apparatus.

Velocity (CCSSO) Determine the average speed of a toy car.

* Where the Rubber Meets the Road (KDE) Test friction of three different asphalt strips: dry, wet, and oily.

 

Properties of Matter

Rubber Band (TIMSS) Investigate what would happen to the length of a rubber band as more and more rings were hung on it.

Reactions

Blue (APU) Follow directions and correctly utilize equipment in a simple chemical experiment.

Chemical Changes (NYSED) Determine what evidence indicates that a chemical change is occurring.

Heating Crystals (APU) Examine the effects of heating on various crystals.

Identifying Elements (CCSSO) Observe spectrum of fluorescent light and incandescent light using diffraction glasses.

Paper Chromatography (CCSSO) Separate ink into component chemicals using paper chromatography.

* Powder (KDE) Study several unidentified substances and suggest a use for each substance.

Rate of Solution (NYSED) Determine the amount of agitation necessary to dissolve various sized sugar particles.

Reaction Rates (CCSSO) Determine the relationship between temperature and reaction rate of a mixture.

Starch and Sugar Testing 1 (NYSED) Determine the presence of starch and sugar in unknown solutions.

Starch and Sugar Testing 2 (NYSED) Design and conduct an experiment to determine which solutions contain starch or sugar.

Temperature & Enzymes (CCSSO) Investigate the effect of adding rennin to milk at different temperatures.

Threads (APU) Observe the similarities between burning threads.

Sound box (APU) Make simple observations and identify relevant variables, such as frequency and diameter.
